MUSICIANS WANTED! Fife, Drum & Bugle

under the leadership of Boy Scouts of America Venture Crew 1861 


CIVIL WAR REENACTORS As a practical matter, fifers play other instruments and are trained on fife by the corps.  Most drummers have some training or are taking lessons in rudimentary drumming (marching snare or bass). Buglers usually play trumpet or other high brass as their first instrument. In the past, some members of the Fife & Drum Corps (FDC) played violin, guitar, tin flute or othe intruments appropriate in a Civil War camp band. Positions in the Civil War Color Guard are also available as flag bearers and infantry rifles.  Riflemen must be 16 years of age to go on the reemactmet battlefield; Training a parades permit younger reenactors.  Flag bearers may be any age (but must be able to carry a heavy flag).  Musicians may be any age betweem11-21.  Adult leadership positions for musicians and others may be available. The Venture Crew/1st PRVC issues a high quality uniform and period correct equipment to any FDC member on loan -- there is no charge.  However, if members prefer their own "kit", any decent-quality, generic Federal uniform owned by a member is permitted. The corps als has Confederate uniforms if needed for events. The corps also provides music and high quality, period-correct fifes, drums and bugles.  See page on Uniforms and Instruments for more details. 

PROUD MEMBERS OF THE BSA The Venture Crew also takes part in activities like kayaking, local BSA camping skills and leadership training weekends, and advancement activities.   Many members also keep active in other troops. Over 26 Eagle and Gold Award Girl Scouts have come through our ranks since 2004. Several Venturers are now working on Summit and Eagle Awards. We support scout advancement by offering merit badges, leadership training, service hours, skills weekends, and Eagle/Summit project support  Venture Crew Offices count toward BSA advancement and Eagle leadership requirements as well as Venturing Advancement to Summit Award.  In 2017, Nine Venture Crew 1861 youth members and 2 leaders participated in the BSA National Jamboree. 

General operating expenses are covered by dues (at $50 per year in 2018  plus event fees to cover food, event registrations, etc. Generous donors help defray Civil War uniforms and equipmenrt costs.

Geography is not a bar to membership. The Crew is chartered by the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association (GBPA) and often holds optiona practices and youth meetings near Lancaster, PA or before events. Current members and leaders hail from  Adams, Cumberland, Erie, Lancaster, and York Counties in Pennsylvania and from Manchester MD. The Crew participates in a number of events in Gettysburg with the GBPA each year as part of its extensive schedule of performance and reenactment events in PA, MD, VA and Washinton DC.  


Youth members, Boys & Girls, ages 11-20 may join our Civil War musicians through these groups:


Young Adults ~boys & girls, ages 13 though 20~ and completed 8th grade.

(All Color Guard members must be Venture Crew members and may have to be age 16 to fire rifles or carry rifles on the battlefield at reenactments-- all riflemen may drill at renactments and perforn color guard duties in parade and civic funtions)



Scouts ages 11 years and older (or Webelos in some circumstances) with musical aptitude may participate as a Fife and Drum Corps musician
